Anyone can follow a study group on P2PU. Participating is the next level of engagement. The sign-up is a space where interested individuals can express their interest and background in the topic and commit to working with the rest of the participants. Please answer the following set(s) of questions if you want to become a participant or organizer.

  Bio:

  Hello, my name is Austin and im 21 years old. I have a huge passion for web design (all facets of design really).

  Through working a full-time job and trying to juggle life I feel my design skills are slowly dwindling away. I want to learn all I can about web design and blogging so that I can one day start a business of my own.

  I have a couple websites that need to get more attention from me to really set them up right. Hoping to learn the art of blogging, which being a wannabe web designer really should be second nature. I have WordPress installed but no real content as yet.

  Other passions of mine are playing squash, thinking up business ideas, wishing i could make those ideas, creative writing and designing anything i can, a website, a logo, some wood work, a game (rpg or mmo) or just drawing.

  I have been working with web related technologies for some time now, both developing my own projects & doing a little freelance work for others (and for money). Keeping up with new developments and choosing what to attempt implementing is a constant challenge.
  
  In addition, being self taught, through articles and trial and error, I feel that structured learning/re-learning of basics and/or advanced material will help make me a better and more efficient developer.
  
  I would also like to increase my freelance work and anything that can help give me an edge is welcome.
  
  Right now I've got my hands full, so cannot assist with study group organization — but perhaps in the future.

  I'm a public policy researcher. My focus is on open data and finding ways to make government data -- particularly data with information about neighborhoods -- more accessible to people who don't work with data for a living. My wife and I have a charming 3-year old daughter. I'm a big fan of classical music, nature, and soccer/futbol/football. I dream of making a media player that works for classical music - lets you shuffle by work instead of song, and distinguishes better between composers and conductors/pianists/orchestras/etc. Shouldn't be too hard in my spare time.

  I got my feet wet with JavaScript in the P2PU online mapping course taught by Nick Doiron in the spring. Now, I need to understand JavaScript better so I can figure out how to use it to create dynamic data visualizations (maps, tables, charts) for my job.

  I'd like to learn how to use the Google Charts and Maps APIs with data I have either in a CSV file or on a database behind the web server. I understand a little about PHP and MySQL, but don't understand how to use those tools to make data accessible by JavaScript to populate a map or chart.

  I'd like to help with the study group organization, but I'm afraid I won't have enough time to follow through on the commitment, so it's better to say I can't help with that. But I'll do what I can.

  What made you interested in this topic?

  I'm in the middle of HTML & CSS From the Beginning with Jamie Curle, and I've loved it.  When I complete that couse, I hope to have a firm foundation of structure and appearance of websites.  I want to add some flair to the behaviour, and I expect JavaScript will help me do just that.

   

  What do you hope to achieve by participating?

  First, I hope to learn JavaScript (to a reasonable degree).  Next, I hope to meet more amazing people who are comitted to helping each other along the way.  And finally, I hope to be able to contribute and help someone else in a meaningful way.

   

  Are you interested in helping with the study group organization?

  I actually have no idea what the study group organization is.  I guess I need to do a little more reading about this course and how it's run.  I'm ready and willing to be an active participant, complete assignments, post questions and answers, and work in a group.

  Javascript has become almost mandatory in web development, but is also quite useful for InDesign as the Adobe products accept Javascript for its scripting.

  I've been trying on my own to learn Javascript reading several books and watching many tutorials. There are some items that I get stuck on or don't completely understand and I could really use the feedback.

  My background is in biology and bioinformatics, generally with little visualisation involved. That has changed recently, due to a couple of projects in the company I work for is involved in. Some of my collegues use Silverlight to implement certain projects, and I'm interested to learn how straightforward it is to replace certain components by open technologies, in particular HTML5 and JavaScript.

  I hope to be primed in these technologies and have and easier start since my last confrontation with JavaScript was more than eight years ago and not particularly lasting. I also hope it will come in beneficial when working with (writing) Firefox plugins.

  Aside of this I also have some general interest in open technologies and recently also in visualisation concepts, for instance the processing language, particularly for graph representations.

  If the concept works for me and the community is interesting helping with the study group organization will be interesting.
