This course will become read-only in the near future. Tell us at community.p2pu.org if that is a problem.

Networking & Social Media Information

Social Media BandwagonPart of the beauty of the MOOC is meeting and connecting with people who share similar interests (and you aren't following or participating in the MOOC without having an interest in virtual worlds and games in education, I imagine!).

So, let's connect. Please comment with your digital footprint and social media presences! Share as much or as little as you want. Feel free to include everything from Twitter to Tumblr to Wordpress to Diigo to even the most cutting-edge/obscure social media that you use. Most of us will be glad to follow similarly-minded people!

My identity on social media spans many venues in order for me to have a real sense of the differences. There is no personal branding strategy as much as I want to be a part of certain conversations that are happening across domains and professional associations.

My SL avatar, Delightful Doowangle, is creating a life of her own and I am along for the ride ;-) so far, so great.

YouTube unfortunately does not allow changes in user names so I am 27Vincent72 lol (and no that is not a password for something else)

Much of my research is in EndNote, but I am about to engage in Mendeley too.

My belief in education and research outweighs privacy so my real and online lives intermingle. My indenty(ies) are a work in progress and I look forward to connecting with others. It will be nice to see how you are managing cognitive load, information overload, and distributing knowledge across the metaverse.

I have a lot of accounts (for both my real and virtual identities), although I don't actively use them all. I'm still in the process of trying to figure out how to balance my various accounts/identites, and would like to hear some thoughts on how others manage that.

I use my RL LinkedIn and Facebook accounts the most - LinkedIn for professional networking, and Facebook as an odd combination of personal/ professional contacts. I hardly ever use Twitter, although I feel like I should. I actually started a blog this year, but haven't done anything with it since the initial post.

I'm new to this P2PU platform so I'm wondering whether other participants in the MOOC are able to view our digital footprint info in our profiles if we've shared this info?

Yes, they are! We are just trying to centralize the information so participants don't need to go to every individual's profile page. Instead, they can read through these comments (and I will be compiling a Google Doc of information for everything organizing by person as well as by social media application :D ).

Not to encourage laziness, but seeing as we are all busy people, making networking just a little bit easier would be a good thing! :)

Thanks, Cat! I agree, centralizing the contact info would be helpful, so here's mine:

Social networking... hmmmm...  I am on twitter, and probably need to follow it more closely.  I access it through an iGoogle page that I have, because that allows me to get news and some of the gadgets that I have found are fun.  Then there is SL, where I have a couple of different groups that I stay in touch with.

... sounds totally lame, but that's it.

I don't have a smartphone, mostly because I am online so frequently that it would feel redundant to me.  There are a few sites that are part of some of my professional communities, but those are not open social networking.  People who want to contact me can send me a text, and then I'll get back to them, oftentimes using MSN chat.  Facebook?  Nope.  And for two reasons.  First of all, it's one more site to maintain.  I do a LOT for my students on Blackboard, keep up with email for school, keep up with personal email and personal connections, and that is more than enough to keep me busy.  Secondly, when my daughters got into Facebook, so did their father and they complained LOUDLY about him friending their friends.  So I made a conscious decision to not go there... when your kids are at the university age, you pretty much don't want to know everything anyway.
