Week 2 Machinima - Reflections and Sharing

Friday and Saturday groups can work to complete their machinima.  Remember to keep it simple and fun.  On Sunday night April 1 ( Yes April Fool's day) we will have the REVEAL!

Red Carpet event At the Gaity Theatre - we were there during week 1

in Second Life at 6:00 PM - invite your friends to the MOOC Machinima Premier.  This will be a time to celebrate the successes and reflect on the process - perhaps start thinking of next steps.  Remember that the purpose is to learn, improve our practice and better support our students.

Consider your students:

  • What did you learn from this week that may change the way you work with students?
  • What skills (technical an non-technical) will your students need prior to participating in a machinima project?
  • What skills do you need to work on for yourself as an educator in using this stategy with students?

I'll bring the popcorn!

Task Discussion

Thanks to all machinima participants for their awesome work in such a short time...the Premier was terrific!  And a BIG thanks to Aevalle Galicia for getting the venue and setting up all the movies....and giving us all the links.  I am certain that these products will be polished up and be submitted to the ISTE EDUmachinima Fest.  Not sure of the deadlines but it coming up so as they say in the scouts "be prepared".

As we end week 2 and go into week 3 please post your reflections on Machinma as a teaching and learning tool.

    • If you have not incorporated Machinma into your work, how will you do this in the future?
    • If you have already used machinima in your work, how did the activities this week cause you to consider different ways of doing so?
    • Will you use machinma as a tool for you to create material for you students - to help teach a concept or will you use machinima as a tool that your students use?
    • How do you see your students using the tool?
    • What kind of expectations do you have for students using this medium?  What kind of time will you/can you provide for them to be successful?

Currently, I teach educators in how to best use technology in their classrooms (not just to use it for tech's sake).  So, personally, I'd probably use machinima in doing short instructional type videos as well as offer suggestions on how they might incorporate it.  That said, if I ever get back into the classroom myself (before my current gig, I taught college level writing and lit courses), I would LOVE to have maybe our semester class project to be a machinima of one of the texts we're covering that semester, but maybe allow the students to suggest a twist on the story--for example, Romeo and Juliet placed in a Navi sim or 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea done with tinies.

    Hi Grid,

I would very much like to create more machinimas for the fiming of language conversations, at the moment I am fully exploiting my first one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBTldBw-UqQ&feature=youtu.be, and would like to build on this first pilot work.

At the moment I am only seeing machinima as a tool for me to create material for my students, and I see them using it as an added value to preparatory work done during the lessons.

Machinimas offer  a way of making movies with very little financial effort and infinite content possibilities. Where the content is for me to pour into.

    Best regards,

    Angela:-:Rosavioletta :-)

I'm looking forward to the REVEAL tonight!  I've joined the course mid-stream and am such a newcomer to virtual worlds that I'm having to just take a little time to orient myself to it.  Nothing like immersion for learning, right?  Jumping into the deep end with all you experts should help speed up my learning curve, I suspect.  Bear with me, please, while I try to get up to speed!  I've previewed a couple of the productions, and I'm WOW-ed to say the least!  Every good performance needs some good audience members, so that's what I'll be for now.  See you there.

    Hi Jack,

I started my journey in virtual worlds not long ago and have been harboured  in SL since July 2011.

I just  wanted to share THE  thought that kept jumping up into my mind while watching your "something": You are a "Tinkerer"!! ..and tinkering in progress I was watching all along your videos!

Please take it as a big compliment!! ... I called my various usernames "Tinkerer..something" after meeting  this concept in John Seely Brown's work and believe Tinkering is just what people should do in virtual worlds, experiment, try out ideas, share and build on...

and last...great work, you have a lot to say ;-D, don't give up!

Hi Angela! I really appreciate your reply! Thank you. I too have been intrenched in SL and mostly as a "mascot" I'd refer to myself, on ISTE Island for the past almost 5 years now. Tinkering is about the extent of my commitment until now. As I was preparing myself in becoming an educator, finishing up two degrees for the past 8 years, I have been 'occupied' with mostly that task. I was directed through my mentor's at SUNY through all this to get my butt in-world and learn it too. Although these mentor's had less experience with SL at the time and still to this day even.. They had the forsight to make the platform part of the new teacher preperation.. I am deeply in-debted for this because out of 20 M.A.T. SUNY candidates beginning the Masters' Degree for teaching process, only 5 were left standing at graduation (last June) and from that I am the only one active in-world.

I seethe writing on the wall, I have "been part" of many an occaision on ISTE, know most of the 'players" and feel kinbship toward all. I have Real World connections with some as well (here in NYS). WE are the avante gard and the "Pioneers" now in place in the midst of "A perfct storm" - my opinion.. That the current situation and general understanding of the state of the state within "education" as an industry and as a staple or pillar within our society has and is shifting under our feet. Technology and the promises and potential it can provide to propel us all into the 21st cent. is essentially upon us. We therefore have an obligation as the pioneers within this "industry" and professional charge we assumed, that will facilitate the roll out to real world application -- for our peer colleagues and with our students.

I'm flattered to be counted here then among my virtual reality peers and look forward to many more moons of collegiality and group participation as well all raise the tides for all the ships WE KNOW will need to pass through this chasm of rough going in education...

    Peace and thank you!

Jack (Mosel) btw in real life... lol

    Hi Jack -

I loved the passion complimented by the sim!  This is a fantastic location for your monologue to speak about discoveries and the medium and not being complacent.

I was inspired by what you had to share.  I would love to see some quotes from what you spoke since the visuals were from the literature.  These quotes are the kind we can share with others who doubt the power of virtual tools.

    Thank you,

    Kim

Hey thanx Kim! a work in progress then!.. More to cmoe.. My aspect effect - intent was to use an interesting dialog along with an animated avatr "speaking" and along with interesting dialog, filmed in an interesting space.. That an attention focus might be had from the viewer in being more entertained and maybe even motivated to become engaged in the message overall... Maybe a good technique for segue' into a subject matter or topic for instruction then...?

I want to use 3D Unity Gaming engine and Blender next... I was thinking we might want to discuss this for another MOOC or even to jump start it in ours...? Man.. If we can keep the inertia going and build on top of what we are doing with machinima with even more - COOL! from building, creating and filming that with these tools.. The WOW effect is unlimited.. AND we will be really on the road to creating our content for our curriculum's and therefore seriously moving the ball down the filed for demo and advancement into VR Education being more achievable and realistic as "products" such as these will be self-evident that we are fully out of "concept" now and.. authentically moving into our own reality base for roll out into "mainstream" for practical use in teaching.

Great example of narration in machinima! I appreiciate the references to "adjacent possible"and Steven Johnson. Keep going making those valuable examples that share scientific awe. Take up as much of the MOOC experience as comfortable. It should be around for a good while so that many of us can circle back and get more out of the postings. A good many of us are flying by the seat of our pants ;-)

Hi Jack, sorry for the late reply but I felt I needed time to think about it.

I'll start by saying that you were lucky to have teachers with such an open mind. Pushing you towards something they -themselves - did not know that well,  but felt it would become important for you,  is rare. A great lesson ..in the lessons. That heritage you were transimitted is clearly there when you say we "have obligations... for our peer colleagues and ..students".

I agree, it's our chance to prepare the world for the new gneerations to come, our resposibility.

I am quite impressed by your definition  "virtual reality". Exactly the concept  I have been trying to convey to my friends, non virtual reality accustomed. It is real, even if a pixel reality or "virtual reality" as you say.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, enthusiasm and feelings !

    Best regards,
