7pm SLT - EVE Online Tour with John Carter McKnight
You will need to download the trial version of EVE Online from https://www.eveonline.com/start/. It is a 14 day trial so we recommend waiting until Friday before downloading it.

Hello everyone,

Enjoy your Friday evening. :D Please remember on Saturday we have the above discussion and tour of the EVE Online MMORPG. We will be using Ventrilo  once we get into EVE Online and our tourguide will provide the information at the discussion.

In the meantime, please feel free to download EVE Online this evening  or Saturday morning and research the MMORPGs if you wish.

I'd love to hear your comments about your initial thoughts on this MMORPG before we go in. So we can contrast to once we finish the tour. :D

Made a quick animoto of our screenshots. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9x9ABPBpuk

We will make another excursion into EVEOnline before our 14 day trials run out.

Great slideshows, Kae and Abacus, on EVE session!

About Monday's Horde run, does our toon have to be in Horde? I've leveled an Alliance Draenei priestess to 12 and no longer have a Horde toon.

    Thanks, Lotus

Monday, we have two objectives. First is getting on to google + , so everyone can see the audio and the screensharing capabilities for virtual worlds and games. I think it may totally change how we do orientations in SL and also in MMORPGs. While we are at it, we will be using it to coordinate the Horde toons and see how we can get everyone in the same place and try a dungeon or a battleground. We won't be able to get your alliance toon in a group. Feel free to watch or make another toon. You don't have to make an orc or a troll this time. You could consider a blood elf, tauren or an undead if you prefer. Also the guild is currently at 91% and it would be really cool for everyone to see it achieve level 3.

    Thanks,

    Kae

Thanks, Kae, for the info.  Today I created a google+ account, so please include me on that part of the Monday meeting.  As for creating a Horde toon, I'd like too - much depends on available time :^).

Don't worry about if you don't have time.

My take home lesson was... read the manual first. Thank you Kae for so cleverly demonstrating this to us last night :D I know it was all part of your master plan.

I'm going to be on the road, more than likely, when you guys are doing the EVE thing (have to go pick up my dad at the airport)--but  have a great raid! cheeky

Don't forget to take lots of piccies!  (The scenes are pretty gorgeous in there!)

  • Jerry Buchko   April 14, 2012, 1:07 p.m.

Any chance we could get John to share his desktop in a Google+ Hangout for the EVE tour? I think that would help open up the experience to those of us in the MOOC who are interested but otherwise wouldn't be able to attend using the game's client. Hopefully Hangout's native voice capability would work well for us, but if not, we could use Vent as a backup.

This approach worked out quite well for Abacus & me using Skype's desktop sharing during the Minecraft tour. Unfortunately, Skype only allows 1:1 video & desktop sharing in its basic free mode. A G+ Hangout will allow up to 10 in a session. (And Hangouts On Air would allow for many more, but I don't think it's been rolled out to everyone just yet: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/12/google-hangouts-going-beyond-status.html ; there's even an entire education conference that's planned to be held using it: https://sites.google.com/site/eduonair/home)

Great suggestion on the use of Google+ Hangout.. It was awesome to play with it and see what everyone else was doing. I really see myself using this tool more often when working with new users or even in a synchronous hands on session (f2f or online) :D

I think it really could spell the end of the red Solo cup warning system (i.e. putting up a flag or cup ontop of your monitor if you have an issue). :D

Thanks! I'm really glad that we were willing to experiment with it! Despite some of the initial wrinkles we had to address, the experience turned out so much better than I had even hoped, especially given the very heavy video streaming from similtaneously sharing multiple desktops. The synchronous voice communication also held up so well despite the video streaming we were ultimately able to drop Vent as a back up, which did surprise me given my earlier test trying to stream SL.

Given the lessons learned, I think we'll be able to get people up & running in the Hangout environment much more smoothly & quickly in the future.

    Pure capitalism!

But when I watched this video on the sandbox page http://www.eveonline.com/sandbox/  it made me think of Bev’s talk on the future of bots in virtual spaces and how anything you do might have a ripple effect on the whole virtual world.

  • Jack Mosel (Jack Buxbaum in Second Life!) @moseljack (Twitter)   April 14, 2012, 12:11 a.m.

I am DL' ing EVE and will be in world tomorrow night. I think (for me) this maybe the MMORPG Immersive educational game which may intrigue me the most... I have researched (lightly), the roles played from character selection and the different activities associated with each that meets individualized gamer's needs and motives for wanting to play. Their is a whole universe (The Sandbox) that is open and accessible within EVE as opposed to guilds and two different worlds, all seeming to provide for a more isolated experience or removed from a universal effect therefore within WOW. There are contrasting and selcted videos I found on YT to give more of an overview from someone who has gaming experience with both WOW and EVE. (see below) *** This is not from a teacher perspective however...

I remain committed to exploring and remaining open to using MMORPG's for educational purposes... (Again) I am a science teacher, I teach Earth Science, Living Environment science and Astronomy... I am brutally determined to not "waste" time with promoting game play with my students as if this coming from me is an expenditure from the trust I have earned from them... If I reccommend game play it's because I'm in it and I see that there is applied use relevent and germane to my core and content. Reaching "other" skill-sets which cater to higher order / brain based learning is gravy then... I must meet the minimum requirements to engage content therefore that I am required to transfer to my students by law and through high stakes Higher than College even... and then "risk" from the trial from exploraion into new game-based pedagogy WITH my students within THEIR school can be justifably made from my vetting the activities as being effective and worth the extra effort to include into my lesson plans and recreate the curriculum from inclusion of the game play to include assessment and checking for engagement, attention as well as finding and looking for ways to identify DISCOVERY from new learning potential and itemizing that as well as capitolizing on that .. with 100 moving targets... (My students)...

I therefore am the consummate profesiional charged with "freedom" to explore, and I will "live or die" by the "risk" I'll make then (as an educational pioneer) from implimenting brave new worlds in immersive 21st century education... This extra effort clearly is because the highly paid "expert(s)", administrators and politicians of Federal State and local governemtns involved within educational mandate and directives to make ploicy and/or to regulate and deciminate cutting edge pedagogy to be implimented within our K-12 classrooms, have no clue as to what the state of the state really is  WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD  >>> INSIDE the classroom of the U.S. Secondary High School Science classroom ( I AM able HIGHLY Qualified to make this staement). One thing everybody is on the same page with however is that the school's are broken and something needs to be done ... and we are looking for Superman... Well, we keep waiting on Supermen... we're screwed... BE Superman.. BE Epic!

RISK therefore, is what the QUEST we're clearly on shall be named. This is the quest we are all on within this quest we are fully immersed here, within week 4-5 of this MOOC from the clan hailing from VWBPE 2012.. We are GUILD!

    Looking forward then... to EVE.

Thanks so much for sharing these videos Jack. Synnistry did an amazing job of commenting on what was swon. If there is much editing in her video it is almost inperceptible to detect. The comparison of WoW and EVE Online is extremely well done.

I wanted to share a possible resource you could use for your science course. Last year, I met a fantastic professor from University of Wisconsin, Madison, Dr. Teri Balser. She taught soil science and was one of four academics named teacher of the year in 2010 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. While at Madison, a team of staff assisted Dr. Balser in making a table top game used in face to face courses to teach the Nitrogen Cycle. It is called the N Game http://mrwgames.com/available-now/the-n-game

Dr. Balser had conference attendees play the NGame during her session and we got sucked into the game play. It is not easy and may be too difficult for your students to enjoy without some of your expert coaching. If you try this out can you let me know how it goes? Dr. Balser is now a Dean at the University of Florida in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. I talked to her about taking the game to the next level online. A long way from becoming an MMORPG, but may fit open sim or SL :-)
